great job on the tunes as well as your solos. you definitely have a mature touch and sense of dynamics not to mention facility that serves the music so well.

i also felt that your solo wasn't just a chops fest show, but rather, had a direction and was taking me places. congratulations to you and hope that you have an illustrious career as a musician! [img]smile.gif[/img]

About the sound:
I like the sound in the solo, very natural and powerful, but it is different to the drum sound in the grooves and the playalongs.I like the drum solo sound more. Compare the two sounds: shuffle and the solo.
I am specially interested in the technical aspects. Mics, place (your house,a studio), method used, etc...

ok guys....thanks so much for the positive comments....i really appreciate it coming from people who know there stuff.

ok one question at a time...

1) i just turned 18

2) I use coated ambassadors on top, clear on bottom, power 3 on bass.....bought new head for snare "Evans ST dry" (the one with the holes at the edges),....only used on the drum solo....sounds great.

2) Main ride was a K custom special dry ride (i love it) and a left side ride as a 2nd one.

3) mic positions etc....its in a small room with two beds (our guest bedroom) and i used my new small yamaha mixer (4 mic inputs) and borrowed an average shure drum set mic kit....put a bass drum mic inside the drum, one overhead (my own samson condenser mic) and put one mic between 10 & 12 and one between 14 & 16......the shuffle groove was recorded with a snare mic......for the rest i think i let the overhead get the snare....played with a little EQ.....the sound is very good considering....

4) and peter your question....indeed the tiempo piece was a big challenge to me. one of my weak points is hitting accents with the band and keeping the time flowing nicely.....i had part of a lesson with thomas on this subject.....the book with the cd arrived on last saturday and i had been playing along to the original studio version on pads.......and the first time i listened thru to the minus drums version with the chart infront of me....so many nuances became apparant; it was a great help

....but the first few times thru it was hopeless.....i was a about to sort of give up and admit that it would never be ready for my exam (tomorrow).............but i didnt want it to beat me....so i spent from 10am til about 6pm practicing it. literally....no breaks....just went for it.

there are three or four tough spots.....the 1st is the ridiculous first section of stabs (at 59 seconds) then the 6/8 part, then the stabs while soloing, then the one bar drum breaks that appear twice in the piece. i looped these on my mini disc and did them allllllllllll day long.

first catching the stabs etc....then orchestrating....then sorting out feel, then dynamics....etc.

its only yesterday and today that i feel ok with it....the version u guys hear, i recorded like on friday....i had been trying to do a perfect take for the whole weekend....but there was always ONE flipping spot that went wrong.....or i'd get a good version and the mini disc overloaded and the sound went out in a vital part...annoying!

but i felt so good having accomplished it....completed a task. it felt good. esp. considering ive always seen weckl play it and thought it to be waaaayyyy above me.....which it still is in many respects....but at least i can get thru it now.
